LeBron/Gilbert a post by Matt Davidson from GTD

This is a recent post by Matt Davidson, a good friend of Go the Distance Ministries. Matt has been writing daily devotional thoughts on and off for the past couple years.  I asked if I could post his thoughts about the recent LeBron James move to the Miami Heat from the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Thanks Matt.  Let me or Matt know what you think by posting your comments.

From Matt on 7-9-10:

2 Timothy 3:2 For people 2 will be lovers of themselves, 3 lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3:3 unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good, 3:4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God.

I don’t want to judge.  Matt N. and I had a great “conversation” on Facebook about the lack of class displayed by everyone involved in the LeBron James decision (good stuff, Matt!).    Just sad.  One needs a 1-hour special about himself, the other (Gilbert, Cav’s owner) acts like a 3rd grade child lashing out because he didn’t get his way.    And then a network (ESPN) that covered every second of this whole debacle that is then the 1st to point fingers when people scoff.  And then the fans, who can’t understand why nobody wants to stay there, are burning jerseys in the streets.

This is NOT what I meant in yesterday’s note about becoming like children!!!!

What wasted space.  We should have given people like you guys an hour long special instead!  (Examples like Kevin for leaving his great job at Zondervan to pursue ministry.  Brothers getting up at the crack of dawn every Thursday to work hard on difficult issues together, etc.).

Not much of a devotional today, I guess, maybe I just needed to vent.  Maybe it’s a “present passion that’s a window to a wound.”  I try hard to act humbly, maybe I’m just irked by people who do not.  I’m praying on this now.

I’ll keep you posted.  And my head is on a swivel as I’m listening for God to tell me where I need to take my own advice here too.

In the meantime, let’s be wise & learn from others’ mistakes!

On Seeking Seats of Honor in Luke 14:

Luke 14:7 Then 21 when Jesus 22 noticed how the guests 23 chose the places of honor, 24 he told them a parable. He said to them, 14:8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, 25 do not take 26 the place of honor, because a person more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host. 27 14:9 So 28 the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this man your place.’ Then, ashamed, 29 you will begin to move to the least important 30 place. 14:10 But when you are invited, go and take the least important place, so that when your host 31 approaches he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up here to a better place.’ 32 Then you will be honored in the presence of all who share the meal with you. 14:11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but 33 the one who humbles 34 himself will be exalted.”
